I still play with blocks!
Free pattern: Half-Rectangle Triangle Log Cabin

As children, we loved the simple act of playing with blocks - stacking, arranging, and letting our creativity flow. Now, as adults, we can channel that same joy into quilting. Instead of wooden blocks, we use fabric to create beautiful, meaningful patterns. Quilting allows us to capture that childlike wonder, but in a new form.
Scrappy or even improv quilting, in particular, is a fun and free-spirited way to play with fabric. Whether you are a seasoned quilter or just starting, adopting an improv mindset can transform your quilting experience. It’s all about spontaneity. Much like childhood play, you can simply explore, experiment, and let your creativity run wild.
The block I recently put together is not necessarily an improv block, but it is very flexible. You won't need exact measurements, you won't need to match up any seams, and you won't even have to stick to a quarter inch seam allowance if you don't feel like it.
It resembles a classical log cabin block, but it uses half-rectangle triangles instead of regular strips. The HRTs, however, are haphazardly put together and you don't need any special tricks or rulers to make them. You can make a few and assemble them into a baby blanket, a few more for a wall hanging....or many more for any size of bed quilt!
